- The flash can often cause you to lose color or cause the subject of your photo to appear "washed out" or have a flash spot. If this happens to you, turn off the flash and use a tripod. If you do not have a tripod, keep your hand as steady as possible. Lean against a building or piece of steady furniture to help you stay steady.
- If the camera has a neck strap, use it! Hold the camera out so that that the neck strap is pulled as far as a can, this will help steady the camera.
- Learn how to use your camera's auto focus. This prevents blurry shots.
- Learn how to use other features of your camera, such as red-eye reduction, and time-delay shots. If you use a tripod, you can press the shutter button and release with the time-delay, and your camera will not move while it takes the shot. This is especially helpful in situations where the flash is not being used.
- Get Google's Picasa, and learn to use it. This program allows you to make simple edits to your photos including adjustments to color balance and lighting, cropping, and red-eye removal.
- Keep a notebook handy and make notes about what worked well and what didn't. Review your notes often as you practice.
